Fatima Spar and the Freedom Fries
Hailed as the hottest band on the Austrian music scene, Fatima Spar and the Freedom Fries bring their excitingly unique cocktail of Balkan-jazz-swing, klezmer and Turkish pop to Berkshire in June.
"a breathtaking acquaintance with this world music ensemble that jumps around between Dixie jazz, brass band, Gypsy, klezmer, far Eastern traditional, jazz and everything in between"
Rifraf, Belgium
Fronted by ebullient Turkish vocalist Fatima Spar, the band features Alexander Wladigeroff (trumpet, flugelhorn), Andrej Prosorov (soprano sax), Milos Todorovski (accordion), Philipp Moosbrugger (double bass), and Erwin Schober (drums). Readers of Concerto magazine voted them the country's best live band in 2006 and their debut album, Zirzop (a Turkish expression for 'crazy'), released that same year, was nominated for best album at the Austrian Amadeus Music Awards.
Their second album, Trust was released late last year. Singing in both her native tongue and English, Fatima's stories of love, war and political intolerance - with several humorous numbers thrown in - conjure up images of smoke-filled Berlin cabaret clubs between the two world wars; her quirky theatrics add an intensity to proceedings providing an exhilarating upbeat musical experience.
Fatima's lyrics elegantly play around with clichés and prejudice, and even the band's name proudly asserts both its political and humourous edge, referencing as it does the anti-French sentiment in the United States during the international debate over the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
The past year alone has seen them perform in more than 15 countries, and June sees them bring their exciting show to Berkshire - catch these unique performers on the dates below
"extrovert music with impudent edges that has found a style of its own... a wonderful band"
Blue Rhythm, Germany
