Free Icelandic Fun
Wonder Wheel Presents are proud to announce they are bringing the nine-piece Icelandic band Hjaltalin to South Street Arts Centre for a free gig on Sunday 26 July.
Hjaltalin make "strangely beautiful orchestral pop" (Time Out) using a variety of instruments from bass and drums to violin, cello, clarinet and bassoon. They have topped the chart in their native Iceland with their debut album 'Sleepdrunk Seasons', won twice at the Icelandic Music Awards and toured Europe with Cold War Kids.
"They are that rare thing: a band who arrive unheralded, unknown, and ensnare you instantly".
- The Sunday Times
“A touch Arcade Fire but more interesting, vocals are stunning, instrumentation is awesome. Joyous and gentle. Big colourful band to fall in love with. Soul, classical. Classoul.”
- Radio 1
In February, Godwits played a great gig supporting Fanfarlo at the Oakford Social Club. The band have now become Dry The River and their new songs show even more promise than before with striking harmonies evoking the influence of Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stephens amongst others.
Opening act IDRchitechture are named after the infamous Reading ring road and formed from the remaining three members of Reading band stem. In their own words, they "now number at least eight, depending on which friends/girlfriends turn up." Their music references everything from folk-hop to micro beat electronica and they sing about a unicorn named after a window cleaning company (Staybrite) and how to complete a successful season on the World Rally Circuit.
