Sixty Watt Bayonets - Debut EP
Too many bands at the moment try to counter their lack of melody and ideas with shouting and fuzz and relentless military drumming. Sixty Watt Bayonet's debut mini album has plenty of shouting, fuzz and relentless military drumming, but rather than covering up a dearth of creativity which is so often the case, it takes a massive chunk of melodic genius, mixes it with a pint of absinthe, swills it around its mouth and spits it straight in your eye.
From Penny Bayonet's guttural count-in on lively opener '1933' this 7 track EP doesn't stop for breath - screeching guitars and solid bass lines pick you up and carry you off and don't let you go until you get to the end of high water mark 'Dance School', and 'My Heart Won't Rest' by which time Penny is complaining that her 'lungs are wrecked' and becomes surprisingly tender. Well, that is until she finds her larynx has recovered enough to demand some more attention.
This is truly great fun, and is probably what Blondie would sound like if they'd been subjected to what the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Rakes did with their idea. Whoa, get your head round that.
