Sixty Watt Bayonets - Pounding Hearts Fighting Words
Punk and politics usually go hand in hand, but rest assured there was no misuse of expenses employed in the crafting of the Sixty Watt Bayonets' debut 7-track mini-album ‘Pounding Hearts, Fighting Words’. Released by Broken Tail/Josaka on 13 July 2009.
Immediately gouging an infectious, no-messing East-Coast-meets-West-Coast garage pop stomp from start to finish bolstered by singer Penny’s heart-in-mouth melodies, imagine the riff-driven likes of Death From Above 1979 or Les Savy Fav with Souxsie Sioux on vocals and you can consider why the band describe themselves as “a storm in a tiny teacup”. They are not wrong.
2009 is proving prosperous already, with the young 4-piece gathering escalating acclaim supporting NME favourites Ipso Facto as well as upcoming support dates with rising talents 4 or 5 Magicians and Violet Violet. The band recently featured in Noize Makes Enemies Magazine’s Ones to Watch list for 2009, as well as URB Mag’s ‘Next 1000.’ Transatlantic radio plays have arrived too from the infamous Rodney Bingenheimer's Los Angeles KROQ FM show with further plays in the UK, Germany and Macedonia. Having recently completed a six-month residency at the Artrocker Magazine-sponsored Girl Boy Revolution night in Reading, the Bayonets have a reputation to deliver a blistering live show and are being hotly tipped by ex-Killers manager Larry Little.
“with great and powerful girl vocals, violent guitars, banging drums but somehow graceful, Sixty Watt Bayonets bring a whole new art to punk rock” URB Magazine
“foot to the floor garage” GetReading.co.uk
“Just when you think they can’t go any louder, Penny ferociously beats an unsuspecting nearby floor tom, whilst Billy Bayonet clutches his bass near his knees in a vain attempt to wring out one last drop of volume. Beth Ditto has a lot to answer for” Glasswerk.co.uk
