Pete and The Pirates
Posted: Mon, 07 Dec 2009
Pete and The Pirates, one of Reading’s most successful and much loved bands, will be playing a special hometown Christmas show at Sub89 on Sunday 13 December.
The band have just returned from a European tour supporting Maximo Park and a series of gigs in New York at CMJ 2009 where they received rave reviews, including Time Out NY proclaiming they are ‘poised to be the indie darlings of 2010’ and ‘note perfect UK guitar pop’ (New York Press).
The Pirates recently finished recording their second album which will be released in early 2010, the follow-up to last year’s much acclaimed ‘Little Death’ which contained the singles 'Mr Understanding', 'Knots' and 'She Doesn't Belong to Me':
‘There’s life in Brit-guitar pop yet’ The Guardian, 4****
‘Perfect pop without the pretence’ NME, 8/10
‘Unique and thrilling’ Q ****
‘Brashly romantic punk pop’ Time Out 5*****

The band themselves are helping to curate the night and will be supported by Exlovers, Worship and Paul Hodgson.
Exlovers, a five-piece from London whose sound has been described as 'if Elliott Smith fronted The Little Ones', the band recently sold out The Lexington and Club Fandango and play this show as a one-off at the Pirates' invitaton before heading on a UK tour in early 2010.

Worship are a new project fronted by Tim Baggott of Fox Cubs which consists of three members of his former band and Godwits. Their sound takes in everything from Radiohead to Sebastian Tellier, bringing together guitar and electronic sounds impressively.

Opening the night will be Paul Hodgson. Paul, originally from Reading but now in Brighton, sounds like The Clash having a kick around the park with Neil Young...he wowed the crowds at our Crimbo Limbo gig last December and supporting Ipso Facto earlier this year.
